Indentured Servants
Indentured servants were individuals who agreed to work for a specific number of years in exchange for passage to the New World, food, and shelter. This system was common in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in British colonies where labor was needed for agriculture and other industries.
After their contract ended, indentured servants often received land, tools, or money to help them start their own lives. While this arrangement provided opportunities, many faced harsh conditions and limited rights during their servitude, making it a challenging experience for many.
