Ilha da Queimada Grande
Ilha da Queimada Grande, also known as Snake Island, is a small island located off the coast of Brazil. It is famous for its large population of golden lancehead pit vipers, a highly venomous snake species found nowhere else in the world. The island covers about 43 hectares and is largely covered in dense vegetation, providing a natural habitat for these snakes.
Due to the dangers posed by the snakes, Ilha da Queimada Grande is off-limits to the public. The Brazilian government has prohibited access to the island since 1985, allowing only scientific research. This isolation has helped preserve the unique ecosystem and the endemic species that inhabit the island.
