Ile
An "ile" is a term used in anatomy to refer to a specific part of the small intestine, known as the ileum. It is the final section of the small intestine, following the jejunum, and plays a crucial role in the absorption of nutrients and bile salts. The ileum connects to the cecum, which is the beginning of the large intestine.
The ileum is approximately 3 to 4 meters long in adults and is lined with villi, tiny finger-like projections that increase the surface area for absorption. It is also involved in the immune response, containing lymphoid tissue known as Peyer’s patches that help protect against pathogens.
