Ignacio Zaragoza
Ignacio Zaragoza was a prominent Mexican general known for his leadership during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Born on March 24, 1829, in Bahía del Espíritu Santo, he played a crucial role in defending Mexico against French invasion. His victory at Puebla became a symbol of Mexican resistance and is celebrated annually as Cinco de Mayo.
Zaragoza's military career began in the Mexican-American War, and he later served in various conflicts, including the Reform War. He was appointed as the commander of the Mexican army in the east and became a national hero for his strategic skills and bravery. Zaragoza passed away on September 8, 1862, just months after his famous victory.
