Ifa
Ifa is a traditional African religious system and divination practice originating from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. It involves the use of a sacred text, known as the Odu Ifa, which contains verses and proverbs that provide guidance and wisdom. Practitioners, called Babalawos (male) or Iyalawos (female), interpret these verses to offer insights into personal and communal issues.
The Ifa divination process typically involves casting a set of palm nuts or using a divination tray. This practice is not only a means of seeking answers but also serves as a way to connect with the spiritual world and ancestors. Ifa plays a significant role in the cultural identity and spiritual life of the Yoruba people and has influenced various African diaspora religions.
