Ice Pellets
Ice pellets, also known as sleet, are small, translucent balls of ice that form when raindrops freeze before reaching the ground. This phenomenon typically occurs when warm air is overlaid by a layer of cold air, causing precipitation to freeze during its descent. Ice pellets can create slippery surfaces and hazardous driving conditions.
When ice pellets accumulate, they can lead to significant impacts on the environment and infrastructure. They may cause damage to trees and power lines, resulting in outages. Ice pellets are often associated with winter storms and can be a part of mixed precipitation events, along with snow and freezing rain.
