Ibarretxe Plan
The Ibarretxe Plan was a proposal introduced in 2001 by the then President of the Basque Government, Juan José Ibarretxe. Its main goal was to enhance the political status of the Basque Country within Spain, advocating for greater autonomy and self-determination. The plan aimed to establish a new political framework that would allow the Basque people to decide their future.
The proposal included measures for a new statute of autonomy, which would grant the Basque Country more control over its affairs, including taxation and public services. However, the plan faced significant opposition from the Spanish government and was ultimately rejected by the Spanish Parliament in 2005.
