Hystricidae
Hystricidae is a family of rodents commonly known as porcupines. They are primarily found in Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe. These animals are characterized by their spiny quills, which serve as a defense mechanism against predators. Porcupines are mostly nocturnal and are known for their herbivorous diet, feeding on leaves, fruits, and bark.
There are two main subfamilies within Hystricidae: the Old World porcupines and the New World porcupines. Old World porcupines are typically larger and have a more robust body, while New World porcupines are smaller and often have a prehensile tail. Both types play important roles in their ecosystems by aiding in seed dispersal and maintaining vegetation.
