Hyles gallii
Hyles gallii, commonly known as the gallium sphinx moth, is a species of moth belonging to the family Sphingidae. It is primarily found in Europe and parts of North America. The adult moth has a wingspan of about 3 to 4 inches and is characterized by its distinctive green and brown coloration, which helps it blend into its surroundings.
The larvae of Hyles gallii feed on plants from the Rubiaceae family, particularly Galium species, which is where the moth gets its name. These caterpillars are known for their striking appearance, often resembling a twig or leaf, which provides them with camouflage against predators.
