The hyena is a carnivorous mammal found primarily in Africa and parts of Asia. Known for their distinctive laugh-like vocalizations, hyenas belong to the family Hyaenidae. There are four species: the spotted hyena, brown hyena, striped hyena, and aardwolf. They are social animals, often living in groups called clans, which can consist of up to 80 individuals.
Hyenas are skilled scavengers and hunters, often feeding on the remains of other animals. Their strong jaws and teeth allow them to crush bones, making them efficient at extracting nutrients. Despite their reputation, hyenas play a crucial role in their ecosystems by helping to control animal populations and clean up carrion.
