Hyalophora cecropia
Hyalophora cecropia, commonly known as the Cecropia moth, is the largest native moth in North America. It has a wingspan of 5 to 7 inches and is characterized by its striking coloration, featuring reddish-brown wings with white and yellow markings. The adult moth does not eat, as it has no functional mouthparts, and its primary purpose is to reproduce.
The life cycle of Hyalophora cecropia includes four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The caterpillars are green with yellow and blue tubercles and feed on the leaves of various trees, such as maple and birch. After pupating in a cocoon, the adult moth emerges in late spring or early summer.
