Huron Confederacy
The Huron Confederacy, also known as the Wendat, was a group of Indigenous peoples in North America, primarily located in what is now southern Ontario, Canada. This confederacy was formed in the early 17th century and consisted of several tribes, including the Attignawantan, Attigneenongnahac, and Arendaronon. They were known for their agricultural practices, particularly the cultivation of maize, beans, and squash, often referred to as the "Three Sisters."
The Huron Confederacy played a significant role in the fur trade, establishing relationships with European settlers, particularly the French. However, their population declined due to conflicts with the Iroquois Confederacy and the impact of European diseases. By the mid-17th century, many Huron were displaced or assimilated into other tribes, but their cultural legacy remains influential in the region.
