1956 Uprising
The 1956 Uprising in Hungary was a nationwide revolt against the Soviet-imposed policies of the People's Republic of Hungary. It began on October 23, 1956, when students and intellectuals demanded political reforms, including freedom of speech and the withdrawal of Soviet troops. The protests quickly escalated, leading to clashes with the government and the Soviet military.
By November, the uprising had gained significant support, and the government was forced to appoint a new leader, Imre Nagy, who promised reforms. However, on November 4, the Soviet Union launched a military intervention, crushing the uprising and re-establishing control over Hungary.
