Horned viper (Vipera ammodytes)
The Horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) is a venomous snake native to southeastern Europe, particularly found in the Balkans. It is easily recognizable by the prominent horn-like scales above its eyes, which give it a distinctive appearance. This species typically inhabits rocky areas, grasslands, and forests, where it can blend into its surroundings.
Horned vipers are primarily nocturnal and feed on small mammals, birds, and lizards. They are known for their potent venom, which they use to immobilize prey. Despite their fearsome reputation, they are generally not aggressive and will often retreat when threatened.
