Homestake Underground Physics Laboratory
The Homestake Underground Physics Laboratory (HUPL) is located in the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. It operates at a depth of about 1,500 meters, providing a unique environment for scientific research, particularly in the field of particle physics. The laboratory is known for its low-background conditions, which are ideal for detecting rare events, such as those related to dark matter and neutrinos.
HUPL is home to several important experiments, including the Majorana Demonstrator, which aims to investigate the nature of neutrinoless double beta decay. The facility is managed by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority and collaborates with various universities and research institutions to advance our understanding of fundamental physics.
