Home Rule Movement
The Home Rule Movement was a political campaign in the late 19th and early 20th centuries aimed at gaining self-governance for Ireland within the United Kingdom. Advocates sought to establish a separate Irish Parliament that would handle local affairs while remaining part of the British Empire. Key figures in this movement included Charles Stewart Parnell and John Redmond, who worked to unite various factions in support of the cause.
The movement gained momentum with the introduction of several Home Rule Bills in the British Parliament. Although the first two attempts were unsuccessful, the third bill passed in 1912 but was delayed due to the outbreak of World War I. Ultimately, the movement laid the groundwork for future discussions about Irish independence and the eventual establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
