History of Korean Literature
The history of Korean literature spans over a thousand years, beginning with the earliest works in the Three Kingdoms period (57 BC – 668 AD). Early literature was primarily oral and included folk tales and songs. The invention of the Korean script (Hangul) in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great allowed for greater accessibility and the flourishing of written works, including poetry and novels.
During the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), literature thrived with notable genres such as Sijo poetry and historical novels. The 20th century saw the emergence of modern literature, influenced by Western styles and themes, leading to the works of prominent authors like Kim Yu-jeong and Park Wan-suh.
