Hispaniolan Solenodon
The Hispaniolan Solenodon is a small, nocturnal mammal native to the island of Hispaniola, which includes the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It has a long, flexible snout and a body covered in coarse fur. This unique creature is one of the few venomous mammals, using saliva with venom to subdue its prey, which mainly consists of insects and small invertebrates.
This species is notable for its evolutionary history, being one of the oldest living lineages of mammals, dating back around 76 million years. The Hispaniolan Solenodon is currently classified as endangered due to habitat loss and predation from introduced species like cats and dogs. Conservation efforts are underway to protect its remaining populations.
