Hiram M. Chittenden Locks
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, also known as the Ballard Locks, are located in Seattle, Washington. They connect Puget Sound to Lake Washington and Lake Union, allowing boats to navigate between these bodies of water. The locks were completed in 1917 and are named after Hiram M. Chittenden, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer who played a key role in their construction.
In addition to their functional purpose, the locks feature a fish ladder that helps salmon migrate between the ocean and freshwater lakes. Visitors can observe boats passing through the locks and watch fish swimming upstream, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
