Hipparcos mission
The Hipparcos mission was a space-based astrometry project launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1989. Its primary goal was to measure the positions, distances, and motions of stars with unprecedented accuracy. The satellite collected data on over 118,000 stars, significantly improving our understanding of stellar positions and contributing to the field of stellar astronomy.
The mission operated until 1993, and its data has been used to create the Hipparcos catalog, which remains a vital resource for astronomers. The mission's success laid the groundwork for future astrometric missions, such as Gaia, which aims to map the Milky Way in even greater detail.
