Hikurangi Trench
The Hikurangi Trench is a deep oceanic trench located off the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is part of the boundary between the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates, where these plates interact. The trench reaches depths of over 3,000 meters and plays a significant role in the geological activity of the region, including earthquakes.
This trench is also important for marine biodiversity, providing a unique habitat for various species. The surrounding area is rich in resources and is studied for its potential in understanding plate tectonics and the processes that shape the Earth's crust, including the formation of features like the Southern Alps.
