High-Altitude Lakes
High-altitude lakes are bodies of water located at elevations typically above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). These lakes are often formed by glacial activity, where glaciers carve out depressions in the landscape that fill with meltwater. They can be found in mountainous regions around the world, such as the Himalayas, Andes, and Rocky Mountains.
The water in high-altitude lakes is usually cold and can be quite clear due to low levels of pollution and sediment. These lakes often support unique ecosystems, with specially adapted flora and fauna, including species like the Andean flamingo and various types of algae that thrive in harsh conditions.
