High Priest
The term "High Priest" refers to a religious leader who holds a significant position within certain faiths, particularly in ancient Judaism. In the Hebrew Bible, the High Priest was responsible for performing sacred rituals, including sacrifices, and overseeing the Temple in Jerusalem. This role was often hereditary, passed down through the lineage of the Aaronic priesthood.
In other religious traditions, such as Hinduism and ancient Egyptian religion, a High Priest also served as a chief spiritual authority, conducting ceremonies and maintaining the temple's sanctity. The High Priest's duties often included interpreting sacred texts and guiding the community in spiritual matters.
