Henry Wirz
Henry Wirz was a Swiss-born physician and Confederate officer during the American Civil War. He is best known for his role as the commandant of Andersonville Prison, a notorious Confederate military prison in Georgia. Under his leadership, the prison faced severe overcrowding, inadequate supplies, and poor sanitation, leading to high mortality rates among the inmates.
After the war, Wirz was tried for war crimes due to the conditions at Andersonville. He was found guilty and executed in 1865, making him one of the few individuals held accountable for wartime atrocities during the Civil War.
