Henry Chapman Mercer
Henry Chapman Mercer was an American archaeologist, anthropologist, and tile maker, born on May 24, 1856, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his contributions to the study of American material culture and for founding the Mercer Museum, which showcases his extensive collection of artifacts from early American life.
Mercer was also a pioneer in the production of decorative tiles, establishing the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in 1912. His work in both archaeology and tile making reflects his passion for preserving history and craftsmanship, making him a significant figure in the early 20th-century American arts and crafts movement.
