Heloderma
Heloderma is a genus of venomous lizards found primarily in the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. These lizards are known for their distinctive, bead-like scales and vibrant coloration, which can range from black to bright orange or yellow. The most well-known species is the Gila monster, which is one of the few venomous lizards in the world.
Despite their fearsome reputation, Heloderma lizards are generally slow-moving and prefer to avoid confrontation. They primarily feed on small mammals, birds, and eggs, using their venom to subdue prey. Their unique adaptations and fascinating biology make them an important part of their ecosystems.
