Healthcare-Associated Pneumonia
Healthcare-Associated Pneumonia (HAP) is a type of lung infection that occurs in patients who are receiving treatment in healthcare settings, such as hospitals or nursing homes. It typically develops 48 hours or more after admission and can be caused by bacteria that are more resistant to antibiotics, making it more challenging to treat.
HAP is different from community-acquired pneumonia, which occurs outside of healthcare facilities. Risk factors for HAP include prolonged hospital stays, mechanical ventilation, and weakened immune systems. Early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment are crucial for improving patient outcomes and reducing complications.
