Heʻeia Fishpond
Heʻeia Fishpond is a traditional Hawaiian fishpond located on the island of Oʻahu. It was built over 800 years ago and is one of the largest and best-preserved fishponds in Hawaii. The pond uses a system of rock walls and gates to manage the flow of water and trap fish, making it an important resource for local communities.
The fishpond is part of the larger Heʻeia National Estuarine Research Reserve, which aims to protect and study the unique ecosystems of the area. Today, Heʻeia Fishpond serves as a site for cultural education and restoration efforts, highlighting the significance of traditional Hawaiian aquaculture practices.
