Hantaviruses
Hantaviruses are a group of viruses primarily carried by rodents, particularly deer mice. They can cause serious diseases in humans, such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). Transmission occurs when people come into contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, or through inhalation of contaminated dust.
Symptoms of hantavirus infections can include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, which may progress to severe respiratory issues in the case of HPS. Preventive measures focus on reducing rodent populations and avoiding contact with their habitats, especially in rural areas where these viruses are more common.
