Hanford Site
The Hanford Site is a decommissioned nuclear production complex located in southeastern Washington State. Established during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project, it was primarily used to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons, including the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. The site covers approximately 586 square miles along the Columbia River.
After the Cold War, the Hanford Site became a focus for environmental cleanup due to the contamination from decades of nuclear production. The U.S. Department of Energy oversees the ongoing remediation efforts to address the hazardous waste and restore the area, ensuring safety for future generations.
