Halligen
Halligen are low-lying islands located in the North Frisian region of Germany. They are unique because they do not have traditional dikes to protect them from the sea. Instead, they rely on natural elevation to stay above water during high tides and storms.
These islands are characterized by their marshy landscapes and are home to diverse wildlife. The inhabitants of Halligen often build their homes on small mounds called Warften to avoid flooding. The Halligen are an important part of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems.
