Haitian solenodon
The Haitian solenodon is a small, nocturnal mammal native to the island of Haiti. It belongs to the family Solenodontidae and is known for its elongated snout and large, rodent-like teeth. This unique creature is one of the few surviving members of an ancient lineage that dates back to the time of the dinosaurs.
Haitian solenodons are primarily insectivorous, feeding on insects and other small invertebrates. They have a distinctive ability to produce venom, which they deliver through grooves in their lower incisors. This adaptation helps them capture prey and defend against predators in their natural habitat, which includes forests and shrublands in Haiti.
