Haast's eagle
Haast's eagle was a large bird of prey that lived in New Zealand until about 600 years ago. It is known for its impressive size, with wingspans reaching up to 3 meters (10 feet) and weighing around 15 kilograms (33 pounds). This eagle primarily hunted large flightless birds, such as the moa, which were native to New Zealand.
The extinction of Haast's eagle is believed to be linked to the arrival of the Māori people, who hunted both the eagle and its prey. As the moa population declined due to overhunting, the eagle's food source diminished, leading to its eventual extinction.
