Guildford Four
The Guildford Four refers to four individuals—Gerry Conlon, Paul Hill, Carole Richardson, and Richard McIlkenny—who were wrongfully convicted in 1975 for the Guildford pub bombings carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). They were sentenced to lengthy prison terms based on unreliable evidence and confessions obtained under duress.
After years of campaigning and legal battles, their convictions were quashed in 1989, highlighting serious flaws in the British legal system. The case became emblematic of miscarriages of justice in the UK, leading to reforms in police procedures and the handling of evidence in criminal cases.
