Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity
The Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca, URNG) was a political organization formed in 1982 during the Guatemalan Civil War. It emerged from a coalition of various leftist groups aiming to oppose the military government and promote social justice, democracy, and human rights in Guatemala. The URNG played a significant role in the conflict, advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples and marginalized communities.
In 1996, the URNG signed a peace agreement with the Guatemalan government, officially ending the civil war. This agreement led to the URNG transitioning into a political party, allowing it to participate in the democratic process. The organization continues to work towards social change and political representation for the people of Guatemala.
