In the 1980s, Gu Cheng was part of the Mistress Poetry Movement, which sought to break away from conventional forms and express deeper emotions. He later moved to New Zealand, where he continued to write and create art until his untimely death in 1993. His work remains influential in contemporary Chinese literature.
