Greensboro sit-ins
The Greensboro sit-ins were a series of nonviolent protests that began on February 1, 1960, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Four African American college students from North Carolina A&T State University sat at a segregated lunch counter at Woolworth's and requested service. When they were refused, they remained seated, sparking a movement against racial segregation in public spaces.
The sit-ins quickly gained attention and inspired similar protests across the United States. Over the following weeks, more students joined the effort, leading to arrests and increased public awareness of the civil rights struggle. The Greensboro sit-ins played a significant role in the fight for equality and helped pave the way for future civil rights actions.
