Greek People's Liberation Army
The Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS) was the military wing of the National Liberation Front (EAM) during the Greek Resistance in World War II. Formed in 1942, ELAS aimed to fight against the Axis occupation of Greece, primarily targeting German and Italian forces. It played a significant role in organizing resistance activities and mobilizing the local population.
ELAS was composed mainly of leftist fighters and was instrumental in liberating several areas of Greece from occupation. After the war, tensions arose between ELAS and other political factions, leading to the Greek Civil War. The legacy of ELAS remains a topic of historical debate in Greece.
