Grand Army of the Republic
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization founded in 1866, composed of veterans of the American Civil War. Its primary purpose was to promote the interests of Union veterans and their families, advocating for benefits and pensions. The GAR also played a significant role in commemorating the sacrifices made during the war, particularly through events like Memorial Day.
The organization was influential in American politics during the late 19th century, often supporting the Republican Party. At its peak, the GAR had over 400,000 members and established numerous posts across the country, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community among veterans.
