Gilyak Language
The Gilyak language, also known as Nivkh, is a language spoken by the Nivkh people in the Russian Far East, particularly on the banks of the Amur River and the surrounding areas. It is considered a language isolate, meaning it has no known relation to any other language family. Gilyak has two main dialects: northern and southern, which differ in pronunciation and vocabulary.
Gilyak is primarily an oral language, but there have been efforts to document and preserve it through written forms. The language features a complex system of noun classes and is known for its rich vocabulary related to nature and fishing, reflecting the lifestyle of the Nivkh people.
