Gilgo Beach murders
The Gilgo Beach murders refer to a series of unsolved homicides that occurred on Long Island, New York, primarily between 1996 and 2010. The remains of several women, many of whom were involved in sex work, were discovered along a stretch of beach near Gilgo Beach. The case gained significant media attention due to the number of victims and the mystery surrounding their deaths.
In 2020, law enforcement officials announced a renewed investigation into the murders, leading to the arrest of Rex Heuermann in July 2023. Heuermann, an architect, was charged with multiple counts of murder, reigniting public interest in the case and prompting discussions about the safety of vulnerable populations in urban areas.
