Gil Eanes
Gil Eanes was a Portuguese navigator born in the late 14th century, known for his significant contributions to exploration. He is best remembered for being the first to successfully sail beyond the Cape Bojador, a treacherous point along the northwest coast of Africa. His journey in 1434 marked a pivotal moment in the Age of Discovery, opening new maritime routes for European exploration.
Eanes served under Prince Henry the Navigator, who was instrumental in promoting exploration during this period. His successful voyage not only demonstrated the feasibility of sailing past the Cape Bojador but also encouraged further expeditions along the African coast, leading to increased trade and knowledge of the region.
