Giant Silk Moth
The Giant Silk Moth, known scientifically as Hyalophora cecropia, is one of the largest moth species in North America. It has a wingspan that can reach up to 6 inches, featuring striking patterns of red, yellow, and brown. These moths are primarily nocturnal and are attracted to light, making them a common sight during warm summer nights.
Giant Silk Moths are part of the Saturniidae family, which is known for its silk production. The larvae, or caterpillars, feed on a variety of trees, including maple and cherry. After pupating in a cocoon, they emerge as adults, living only a week or two to mate and lay eggs.
