Gempylidae
The family Gempylidae, commonly known as snake mackerels, includes a variety of fish species found in warm oceanic waters. These fish are characterized by their elongated bodies, pointed snouts, and sharp teeth, which help them catch prey. They are often found in deep waters and are known for their fast swimming abilities.
Gempylidae species are important in commercial fishing and are sometimes caught for their meat. However, some members of this family, like the Ruvettus pretiosus, can contain high levels of mercury, making them less safe for consumption.
