Ge'ez Script
The Ge'ez script is an ancient writing system that originated in the Horn of Africa, primarily used for the Ge'ez language, which is now mostly liturgical. It is an abugida, meaning each character represents a consonant followed by a vowel sound. The script has been adapted for several languages, including Amharic and Tigrinya, which are spoken in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Ge'ez script consists of 26 base characters, each modified with diacritics to indicate different vowel sounds. It has a rich history, dating back to at least the 5th century AD, and is significant for its role in preserving religious texts and cultural heritage in the region.
