Gastric Lipase
Gastric lipase is an enzyme produced in the stomach that plays a crucial role in the digestion of fats. It specifically breaks down triglycerides, which are the main type of fat found in food, into free fatty acids and glycerol. This process begins in the stomach, where gastric lipase works alongside other digestive enzymes.
This enzyme is particularly important for infants, as it helps them digest the fats present in breast milk. In adults, gastric lipase contributes to overall fat digestion, although most fat breakdown occurs in the small intestine with the help of pancreatic lipase.
