Gamma Motor Neuron
Gamma motor neurons are specialized nerve cells that play a crucial role in the functioning of muscle fibers, particularly in the muscle spindle system. They are responsible for regulating the sensitivity of muscle spindles, which detect changes in muscle length and stretch. By adjusting the tension in the intrafusal muscle fibers, gamma motor neurons help maintain proper muscle tone and coordination.
These neurons work alongside alpha motor neurons, which directly stimulate the contraction of extrafusal muscle fibers. While alpha motor neurons control voluntary movements, gamma motor neurons ensure that the muscle spindles remain responsive to changes, allowing for smooth and precise motor control during various activities.
