Gambian Pouch Rat
The Gambian Pouch Rat is a large rodent native to West Africa. It is known for its distinctive cheek pouches, which it uses to store food. These rats can weigh up to 1.5 kg and measure about 60 cm in length, including their long tails. They are primarily nocturnal and are often found in grasslands and forests.
These rats are notable for their intelligence and have been trained to detect landmines and diseases, such as tuberculosis. Their keen sense of smell makes them valuable in humanitarian efforts. The Gambian Pouch Rat is also kept as a pet in some regions due to its friendly nature.
