Fungal Nail Infection
A fungal nail infection, also known as onychomycosis, occurs when fungi invade the nails, typically affecting the toenails more than the fingernails. This infection can cause the nails to become discolored, thickened, and brittle. It may also lead to pain or discomfort, especially when wearing shoes.
The infection often starts at the tip of the nail and can spread deeper if left untreated. Risk factors include a weakened immune system, diabetes, and exposure to damp environments. Treatment options include topical antifungal medications and oral antifungal drugs, depending on the severity of the infection.
