French Mandate
The French Mandate refers to the period from 1920 to 1946 when France governed the territories of Syria and Lebanon under a mandate from the League of Nations. This arrangement followed the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, with the aim of preparing these regions for eventual independence while maintaining French influence.
During the mandate, France implemented administrative and educational reforms but faced resistance from local populations. Nationalist movements emerged, leading to tensions and uprisings, particularly in Syria. Ultimately, the mandate ended after World War II, paving the way for both countries to gain independence.
